Buzzer-beater stuns Boxers at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – Down 12 points at halftime, the Pacific men's basketball team stormed back to tie Whitworth with 1:49 remaining.

But the Pirates scored at the buzzer to escape with an 81-79 Northwest Conference victory Saturday night.

After the Boxers jumped out to a 6-0 lead, Whitworth took an 11-10 advantage on a 3-pointer with 12:25 remaining in the first half.

Tied at 11-11, the Pirates knocked down another 3-pointer with 11:53 to go and led until Pacific junior Max Vacco tied the game at 75-75 with 1:49 remaining in the game.

The Boxers never led in the second half but tied the game two more times on an Anthony Hrboka jump shot with 1:10 to go and then a Hrboka layup off a Vacco steal with 7 seconds remaining.

Hrboka, who is averaging 23.3 points per game, recorded his fourth 30-point scoring performance of the season. Ryder Mackay had 18 points and six rebounds in the loss.

The Boxers have not won in Spokane since 2017.

Next: Pacific hosts Lewis & Clark on Friday, Jan. 10 at 5 p.m. inside the Stoller Center.
