Boxers heat up in second half to win at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Pacific women's basketball team captured its first Northwest Conference win Saturday afternoon, defeating host Whitworth 73-59.

Trailing 33-31 at halftime, the Boxers outscored Whitworth 20-8 in the third period to take control of the game.

The Pirates opened the fourth period with 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to get within four points with 9:13 remaining in the game. But the Boxers were able to hold off the Whitworth rally and stretch their lead to as many as 16 points.

Pacific sophomore Sydney Esperanza led all scorers, finishing with 18 points and nine rebounds. Senior Shaade Williams and freshman Karina Franco each scored 15 points. Senior Ava Cook added 13 points.

The Boxers shot 54.4 percent from the field. Whitworth shot 30.6 percent but made 16 of 19 free throws.

With the win, Pacific improved to 1-2 in the NWC and 6-6 overall.

Next: The Boxers host Lewis & Clark on Friday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. inside the Stoller Center.
