GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Pacific men's tennis team picked up one singles win, one doubles victory and dropped another match in three sets to fall to No. 35 ranked Denison in their 2016 season opener, 7-2.

The win for the Big Red on Friday night moved them to 3-0 on the year. For No. 40 nationally ranked Pacific, it was their first dual match of the year (0-1).

Clark Wininger won at No. 2 singles, winning a super tie-break third set over Denison's Jamie McDonald, 6-1, 2-6, 10-8. Pacific's other victory came at No. 2 doubles where Brennan Faith and Wininger won a pro set over Jake O'Koniewski and Blake Burstein, 9-8.

The Boxers lost a battle at No. 4 singles where Ruben Mulhern fell to O'Koniewski, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Oscar Wight also lost a tough one No. 3 singles, falling 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) to Jackson O'Gorman-Bean.

"It was a tough loss for the men today again a solid Denison squad," said Pacific head coach Brian Jackson.  "We unfortunately showed a lot of first-match nerves and didn't play our best tennis throughout. I was proud of the fight that the team showed, playing some of their best tennis when they were behind, but we were not able to capitalize on it as we hoped.  

"It was a gritty comeback from Faith/Wininger in doubles, who did not have their best, but were able to put things together when it counted.  Wininger also performed well in singles…having to battle through a very long match, fighting off cramps to secure the win.

"We will need to put this one behind us quickly, as we hope to bounce back tomorrow against Wooster."  

Pacific will continue their Ohio road trip with a match on Saturday at Wooster (11 am Pacific time) and on Sunday at Oberlin (7 am Pacific).
