Boxers take down Pirates, 7-2

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Pacific swept the doubles and claimed four of the six singles matches to dispatch of Whitworth, 7-2 in men's tennis action on Friday night at the Holce Tennis Courts.

The No. 10 regionally ranked Boxers improved to 5-1 on the season and remained unbeaten in the Northwest Conference at 3-0. Whitworth dropped to 1-4 on the season and to 1-2 in the NWC.

The match was much closer than the final team score would indicate.

The Boxers made relatively short work of the Pirates in doubles action, with Brennan Faith and Clark Wininger winning on court one (8-3), Oscar Wight and Chris Dalton prevailing at No. 2 (8-2) and Reuben Mulhern and Josh Bernstein taking care of business on court three (8-5).

But four of the six singles matches went the three-set distance. While Bernstein won in straight sets at No. 6 (6-0, 6-4) and Wight did the same on third singles (6-1, 6-1), the rest of the events packed plenty of drama.

No. 19 regionally ranked Faith was upset at the top of the ladder by Drew Brigham in a dogfight, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6). Whitworth also got the win at No. 4 singles when Drew Adams clipped Mulhern, 6-3, 5-7, 10-5.

But Pacific's Wininger made it two wins on the day for him with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 grinder over Blake Miller at No. 2, and Dalton did the same with a three-setter over Shane Sandlin at No. 5, 4-6, 6-1, 10-4.

Whitworth is ranked No. 18 in the pre-season Division III West Team Rankings.

"I am really proud of our guys, as they came out strong against a very solid team," said head coach Brian Jackson. "We knew that Whitworth would be strong in doubles, but our guys really took it to them. Whitworth put up a great fight in singles, but some solid performances from Oscar and Clark put the match away.

"Outstanding support from our home crowd tonight, they gave us the energy we needed."

The Boxers will return to action tomorrow (Saturday) when they host Puget Sound at the indoor Holce Tennis Courts. Start time is 1 p.m.
