ResultsFOREST GROVE, Ore. — The Pacific men's tennis team remained unbeaten in conference play with a 9-0 win over Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon at the Holce Tennis Complex.
The Boxers, ranked No. 10 in the west region and No. 40 nationally in NCAA Division III, improved to 6-1 on the season and to 4-0 in the Northwest Conference with the sweep. The Loggers dropped to 0-2 overall and is the same in conference play.
Pacific set the tone early with three wins in doubles, although two of the matches were tight.
Chris Dalton and
Oscar Wight won somewhat easily at No. 1 (8-4), but courts two and three were pushed close to the limit.
Nyles Moisson teamed with
Ben Ryweck to top Daniel Deuel and Nicholas Lupan 8-6, and then at No. 3
Sage Katayama and
Wesley Upton edged Chris Severt and Andrew Struzenberg by the same close score.
Singles play went quicker.
Brennan Faith ruled on court one (6-1, 6-0),
Clark Wininger did the same at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0) and
Reuben Mulhern took care of business at three, 6-1, 6-1.
Katayama and opponent Riley Inn provided the best match of the day, with the sophomore from Hawaii eventually pulling out the 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 verdict. Moisson then cruised at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2) and
Griffin Fraser captured court six with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
"Sage had a really nice win at No. 4 singles," said assistant coach
Pete Yellico. "Griffin also scored his first starting singles victory at No. 6 singles. Doubles set the tone of the match and we were able to cruise to victory with wins from Faith and Wininger, with Clark clinching the match."
Pacific will return to action next weekend, traveling to Linfield on Saturday before returning home to host Willamette on Sunday. Both matches will start at noon.
