ResultsSEATTLE, Wash. — Pacific won two of the three doubles matches but NCAA Division I Seattle University prevailed in the singles column to defeat the Boxers in a non-conference men's tennis match on Saturday night, 4-3.
The loss was only the second of the season for the Boxers, who are now 9-2 on the season. The Redhawks improved to 7-10 with the win. Pacific won a Northwest Conference match earlier in the day, defeating Puget Sound, 8-1.
Brennan Faith and
Clark Wininger won at No. 1 doubles (7-5) in the single set format, and
Reuben Mulhern and
Josh Bernstein did the same at No. 3 (6-2). In NCAA Division I play, winning two of three doubles matches counts as one team point.
But the Redhawks won four of the six singles matches. Pacific gained victory at No. 2 where Wininger prevailed over Tanner Berkable 6-1, 6-4, and the Boxers also won on court six where Bernstein topped Jeremiah Kalmas, 6-4, 6-2. Faith fell at No. 1 to John Stormans, 6-4, 5-4 (retired).
"It was a tough battle against a solid squad," said Boxer head coach
Brian Jackson. We had our chances, but couldn't pull out the win. Love the effort, and the guys showed they belonged on the court with Seattle. Great doubles performances, and we hope it will carry us into tomorrow."
After the long day, Pacific will travel to Portland on Sunday to take on Lewis & Clark in a key NWC match. Start time is noon.
