ResultsPORTLAND, Ore. — The Pacific men's tennis team won an early season match-up of Northwest Conference contenders, topping host Lewis & Clark, 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at the L&C Tennis Dome.
With the victory, the Boxers remained unblemished in NWC action at 7-0 and they are 10-2 overall. The Pioneers are now 4-5 on the year and 3-2 in conference action.
Pacific is ranked tenth in the west region and Lewis & Clark is 13th.
The Boxers won all three doubles matches, and it is a good thing that they did because the singles matches were split 3-3, and five of the six matches were agonizingly close.
In doubles play,
Brennan Faith and
Clark Wininger topped Gordon and Brendan Barrows, 8-5. Faith and Wininger improved to 8-0 on the year as a tandem.
Oscar Wight and
Chris Dalton won a little easier on court two (8-3). At No. three,
Reuben Mulhern and
Josh Bernstein rallied from a 6-5 deficit to beat Harrison Collins and Daniel Hahm, 8-6.
Then things got really interesting in singles play. At No. 1, Faith won in two hard straight sets over Gordon Barrows, 7-5, 6-4. Wininger had the only easy win of the day on court two (6-0, 6-1). Wininger improved to 10-2 in singles action on the season with the victory.
Wight then fell at No. 3 in a marathon match with Kevin Ross, 7-5, 3-6, 13-11. Mulhern went three sets to get the victory on court four against Hahn, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Lewis & Clark won three-setters on courts five and six, with Dalton and Bernstein dropping nail bitters to Harrison Collins and Brandon Barrows respectively. Berstein lost 11-9 in the third and Dalton fell 10-5.
"That was a heck of a battle and great performance by our guys," said Boxer head coach
Brian Jackson. "Doubles was huge for us, as we kept the momentum from last night going."
Pacific won on Saturday at Puget Sound and then lost a 4-3 battle but played well at NCAA Division I Seattle University.
Up next for the Boxers is a trip to southern California, with matches slated for March 19-21. Pacific will begin the road swing at California Lutheran on the 19th. Match time is 4 p.m.
