Results vs. ColbyPASADENA/WHITTIER, Calif.--The Pacific men's tennis team won two matches in two different locations on Monday, wrapping up a swing of outdoor action in Los Angeles with a perfect 4-0 record.
The Boxers began the day with a 5-0 victory at Caltech, following by a 6-3 victory over Colby College (Maine). With the wins, No. 10 ranked (west region) Pacific is now 14-2 on the year.
Coach
Brian Jackson's team began the day with a shortened 5-0 victory over a good Caltech team in Pasadena. The Boxers swept the doubles action to kick off play against the Beavers, who compete in the very tough Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).
Brennan Faith and
Clark Wininger won on court one (8-1),
Oscar Wight and
Chris Dalton won at No. 2 (8-6) and
Reuben Mulhern and
Josh Bernstein completed the victories on court three (8-5).
Wininger won quickly in singles at No. 2 (6-1, 6-3) and Mulhern did the same on court three (6-3, 6-3). Faith was up 6-1, 2-1 at No. 1 singles, but that match was suspended and singles play on courts five and six did not start due to Pacific securing the team win and having the match at 5 pm across town in Whittier. With the loss, the Beavers fell to 3-4 on the season.
In the evening match at Whittier College, the Boxers defeated a strong Colby College team, 6-3. It was the first outdoor match of the spring season for the Mules, who are now 1-2 on the season.
"It was a great way to end the trip, with a gritty and fiesty win against a good Colby team," Jackson said. "I was proud of our guys, they played confident and fought hard all weekend."
The Boxers won two of three doubles matches and four of six singles contests in the match. The teams of Wight/Dalton (8-5) and Mulhern/Bernstein (8-3) won for the second time in a day to get Pacific off to a 2-1 start.
In singles play, Wight (6-1, 6-2), Dalton (6-1, 6-2) and Bernstein (6-1, 6-3) were all victorious. Faith lost at No. 1 singles, but Wininger continued his roll at No. 2 with a nail-biting 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 win over Vlad Murad. Wininger, who earlier in the day was named the NWC Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week, improved to 14-2 on the season in singles play.
Jackson's team will get the rest of spring break off. Next up will be the No. 18 nationally ranked Whitman Missionaries, at Holce Tennis Complex on April 1 at 4 p.m.
