SALEM, Ore. — The Pacific men's tennis team wrapped up one of its most successful regular seasons in school history with a 7-2 road win over Willamette on Sunday.
The Boxers are 17-3 overall and wrapped up Northwest Conference play with a 11-1 record. They will be the No. 2 seed in this coming weekend's Northwest Conference tournament, hosted by No. 1 seed Whitman in Walla Walla, Wash.
Pacific will play No. 30 Lewis & Clark at 2 p.m. on Saturday, while Whitman and Whitworth square off at 10 am. The two winners will play on Sunday at 10 a.m. for the championships.
Pacific shuffled its line-up a bit on a warm day at the Willamette Tennis Courts.
In doubles play,
Reuben Mulhern and
Ben Ryweck played at No. 1 for the first time this season, falling in a tough battle against Colin Yamaguchi and Aaron Schechter, 9-7. At No. 2 doubles,
Nyles Moisson and
Josh Bernstein played together for the first time this year and won, 8-3. The Boxers also won on court three behind the tandem of
Sage Katayama and
Wesley Upton, 8-0.
In singles play, senior
Brennan Faith topped Blake Brash, 6-2, 6-1 on court one.
Chris Dalton moved into the No. 2 spot and won easily, 6-2, 6-1. Katayama played on court three and cruised (6-0, 6-2), while
Griffin Fraser won at No. 6 by the count of 6-4, 6-2.
Upton played at No. 5 singles and outlasted Derek Lund in a marathon, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). He rallied after trailing 5-1 in the first set. Moisson fell at No. 4 to Schechter, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0).
The Boxers go into the tournament ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division III West Region and 33rd nationally. The Bearcats finish the year 3-10 overall and 3-9 in league action.
