The Pacific University men's tennis team showed worthy of its rise in the national rankings with an 8-1 win over George Fox to extend its winning streak to four on Saturday.
The No. 32 Boxers (5-4, 5-2, NWC) head coach
Brian Jackson was really proud of his team's performance. "We put together a full team performance for the first time this season, and it was great to see," said Jackson.
Pacific started the day with a sweep of all three doubles matches. "It was probably our best doubles performance of the season," noted Jackson. "With
Josh (Bernstein)/
Reuben (Mulhern) getting us off to a great start (at No. 2),
Oscar (Wight)/
Clark (Wininger) beating the ITA doubles champs at number one, and our freshmen
Rayden (Murata)/
Ford (Nakagawa) coming back from a big hole to pull the huge win for the sweep."
Bernstein and Mulhern were victorious by an 8-2 margin to improve to 3-4 on the season. The win by Wight and Wininger was their fifth in a row on the season as they posted an 8-4 victory over the reigning ITA doubles champions and All-Americans at No. 1 doubles. The Boxers' completed the doubles sweep with a 9-7 victory by Murata and Nakagawa.
The Boxers won five of six singles matches including a pair of victories that were played outdoors as sunshine emerged through the clouds in Forest Grove. Wins by Wight (No. 2), Mulhern (No. 3) and Bernstein (No. 4) all extended their personal winning streaks to three in their victories. Katayama and Murata were victorious at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively in matches that were held outside as Jackson noted their gritty performances in the wins.
Despite his loss, Jackson noted the tenacious effort by Wininger at No. 1 singles, who was playing against the reigning ITA champion and an All-American in Spencer Watanabe. The senior from San Francisco won the first set but his opponent rallied to win the next two sets.
Next, Pacific will host Colorado College in a non-conference matchup on Sunday, Mar. 19 at noon.
