The Pacific University men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Whitman on Senior Day on Sunday at the Holce Tennis Courts in Forest Grove.
Prior to the match, Pacific head coach
Brian Jackson recognized the Boxers' four seniors –
Josh Bernstein,
Reuben Mulhern,
Wesley Upton and
Clark Wininger.
Â
The Boxers found themselves behind 3-0 after losing all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Wininger and junior
Oscar Wight dropped a tight 9-7 decision to the duo of Zach Hewlin/Peter Jivkov in a matchup of two regionally-ranked teams. Another closely contested matchup was at No. 2 doubles where Bernstein and Mulhern lost in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (10-4).
Â
In singles, three of the six matches went three sets. Wininger dropped a 7-6, 7-6 decision in a tightly-contested matchup of regionally-ranked players at No. 1. The Boxers'
Reuben Mulhern was the lone winner on the day in exciting fashion with a 7-6 (10-4) and 7-6 (10-3) winner at No. 3. Â
Â
Jackson noted that his team fought hard but falling behind 3-0 after doubles was too steep of a mountain to climb for the Boxers. "Although we lost, I am so proud of the seniors in the way that they competed today. It is a good example of what has made this group so special over the past four years. It has been an absolute honor to coach them and I am excited that they have one more weekend ahead to compete."
Â
Next for Pacific is a trip to the 2017 NWC Men's Tennis Championship Tournament at Whitman in Walla Walla. The Boxers will face Lewis & Clark on Saturday, Apr. 22.
