Box Score 2 The Pacific University softball teams split a doubleheader with Pacific Lutheran on Saturday in Tacoma.
The Boxers (9-3, 3-1 NWC) dropped game one by a 2-1 margin and rallied to take the nightcap, 10-9. In game two, Pacific had a season-high 16 hits including five extra-base hits to match a season-high. It was the fifth time on the season that the Boxers have plated at least 10 runs and fourth time at least 10 hits.
In game one, Pacific Lutheran scored a pair of unearned runs to end a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth. The Boxers plated their only run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by
Montana Vaught.
Hailey Miller (Elk Grove, Calif.) and
Haley Kodama (Pearl City, Hawaii) each had two hits as the Boxers had six hits in the loss. Reliever Ashley Burns (El Dorado, Hills, Calif was the tough-luck losing pitcher, falling to 3-2. She pitched the 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five.
In game two, the Boxers overcame an early 6-3 deficit to score a run each in the sixth and seventh for the come-from-behind win. Seven-different players had two hits and Vaught added four more RBI and Katelynn Macatis-Smith (Salem, Ore.) and
Trisha Snydar (Lynden, Wash.) each had two.
Burns, out of the bullpen, pitched the final 3.1 innings to improve to 4-2. She allowed just four hits and struck out one.
Pacific got on the board in the first inning, scoring three – two of which came on a two-RBI double by Snydar. A five-run second put the host Lutes ahead 6-3, who also scored a run in the bottom of the first.
The Boxers started the comeback in the third inning, scoring twice on three hits to cut the lead to 6-5. Then, PLU came back with two runs to make it 8-5.
In the fourth inning, Pacific sent seven batters to the plate and scored three on a three-RBI double by Vaught to tie the game at 8. The Lutes regained the lead in its half of the inning for a 9-8 lead. Vaught tied the game for the second time on the afternoon in the sixth at 9.
The Boxers went ahead for the second time on the day in the top of the seventh.
Jill Uyeda (Gresham, Ore.) tripled down the right-field line to start the inning. Next, Katelynn Macatis-Simth (Salem, Ore.) hit a single to score Uyeda from third to put the Boxers ahead 10-9. With the tying run at third, Burns picked up a ground out to seal the win for the Boxers.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
