Oscar Wight won a pair of singles matches on the first day of The Ojai 118
th Annual Tournament at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club in Ojai, California on Friday.
The senior from Adelaide, Australia, who was named first team all-Northwest Conference a few weeks ago, started his day with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over No. 8 seed Chad Stone of UC Santa Cruz in the round of 32. Then, he proceeded to win his round of 16 contest with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Lucas Tilly of Cal Lutheran to reach the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Also, in the main draw was fellow
Sage Katayama, who lost by a 6-0, 6-2 margin to No. 5 seed Varun Shanker of Cal Tech. Katayama dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 loss in the consolation round to end his tournament run. The third Boxer in the main draw was freshman
Jonathan Chung, who lost his round of 32 match by a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Lucas Chmielewski of Occidental. He also lost his consolation round matchup by a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Kevin Yu of Cal Tech.
The fourth Boxer in Ojai was sophomore
Rayden Murata, who was entered in the independent draw and is the No. 4 seed. Murata picked up a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win to start his tournament in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, he lost a 6-7 (10-6), 6-4, 7-5 decision to Payton Namba of George Fox.
In doubles, Chung and Katayama were 8-5 losers to Shanker/Wei of Cal Tech.
