Gonzalez Leads Pacific Men's Tennis in Season-Opening Match

Box Score A brief rain shower at Central Oahu Regional Park in Honolulu delayed the start of the 2020 portion of the schedule for the Pacific University men's tennis team on Thursday. When the rain clouds away and the sunny skies came out, it was No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps that came away with an 8-1 win over the Boxers on Thursday.

Thursday also marked the debut of the first ITA rankings of the 2020 season that saw CMS ranked No. 2 and return five of its top six players from a team that finished second in the nation in 2019. The Stags' started the match with three-straight 8-3 win for an early 3-0 lead in the match. CMS started singles play, winning the opening set in all six matches. The second set saw some closer scores including sophomore Quentin Gonzalez, who evened his match at a set apiece with a 6-4 win. The Orange, California native carried the momentum into the third set with another 6-4 victory to secure the lone win for Pacific on the day at No. 5 singles.

The trip to Hawaii for the Boxers will continue on Friday when they will face NCAA Division II Hawaii Pacific. The Pacific roster features four native Hawaiians on the roster.
