Men's Tennis Advances To NWC Finals

The Pacific University men's tennis team advanced to the NWC Championship match following a 5-0 win over defending champions, Whitman College, Friday night in Newberg.

Pacific was able to win all three doubles matches to start the semifinal. Quentin Gonzalez and Sean Murphy were able to win at #1 doubles 8-7 (7-3). Reyn Miyagawa and Rayden Murata were able to claim an 8-3 win at #2 doubles to secure the second point. Joey Hu and Koby Murata claimed the final point in the doubles match with another 8-3 win at the #3 spot.

Needing only two points to claim the semifinal win, Reyn Miyagawa claimed the fourth point for the Boxers with a 6-2, 6-3 win at #2 singles. Senior Rayden Murata put the finishing touches on the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win claiming the clinching point for the Boxers.

An elated Coach Yellico had this to say about his team's performance, "To come out and beat Whitman, the 13-time conference winner and defending champions for the third time in a row this season, in the biggest tournament of the year,  is incredible. Whitman had a great season and I wish all of their seniors good luck in their future endeavors. Our guys played really well from the first point to the last. We fought for every point and didn't give Whitman opportunities to get themselves back into the match after doubles. We are looking forward to playing George Fox in the finals on Sunday."

Pacific will look to become Conference Champions on Sunday against George Fox for the first time since 1991.
