Boxers Cruise to Third Straight Victory

Pacific's stellar defense causes problems for Oglethorpe

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Pacific made it three straight victories to start the season with a convincing 63-32 win over Oglethorpe to kick off the Ken Schumann Classic.

The Boxers didn't have their best shooting night at just 34.3% from the floor, but some tenacious defense kept the Petrels in check, holding the visitors to just 25% shooting.

Top Performers

  • Brilie Kovaloff led the Boxers on the offensive end with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting, connecting on five of her eight attempts from beyond the arc.
  • Hannah Stein enjoyed a solid performance off the bench with eight points and two three-pointers.
  • Alexis Intong was dominant on the boards with a team-high nine rebounds while chipping in with five points.
  • Emily Holsan picked up five steals while netting seven points in her first start of the season.

How It Happened

Kovaloff nailed three triples to allow the Boxers to build a sizable lead in the opening minutes. Pacific led 14-3 through the first 10 minutes behind some excellent defense that forced eight turnovers and allowed just one field goal.

Holsan and Kovaloff started to find a rhythm in the second period as each hit a three pointer to further extend the lead. Stein found the bottom of the net from three-point range while Marissa Layosa and Intong got their names on the scoresheet to make it a 32-11 advantage at the break.

Sydney Gray, Danica Schmidt, and Stein poured in five points in the third quarter and the defense stepped up yet again, holding the visitors to just 2-of-10 shooting. The Boxers took advantage and rolled a 53-20 lead into the final period.

Najahia Forks saw her first action in the Red and Black and also scored her first Pacific points in the fourth quarter. Good minutes from Kaylee-Brooke Manuel, Shaade Williams, Anya Henderson, and Taya McCallum allowed the Boxers to cruise to victory.
