How It Happened
Holsan nailed a three-pointer on Pacific's first possession and this sparked a 9-0 run for Forest Grove's team to start the contest. The Boxers were tough on the defensive end and forced eight straight missed field goals for the hosts. Coming out of the first media timeout,
Marissa Layosa entered the game and buried a triple to make it a double-digit lead.
Taya McCallum completed a three-point play and
Sydney Gray followed with five consecutive points to widen the gap and Pacific would take a 22-11 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Corban used a 7-2 run to shave the deficit down to six points but the Boxers replied with baskets from Manuel and Kovaloff to maintain their advantage. The Warriors would not go away, however, surging from behind to snatch the lead when they hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to highlight a 10-2 scoring run. The hosts absolutely caught fire in the second period, going 10-of-14 from the floor while making three of their four attempts from the perimeter. This hot shooting streak allowed Corban to out-score Pacific 29-11 in the quarter to take a 40-33 advantage into the locker room.
The Boxers continued to struggle in the second half as they went just 4-of-17 from the field in third quarter. Despite the shooting woes, the Red and Black were able to keep things close and trailed by just eight going into the final period.
Madison Dunlop poured in five straight points to bring Pacific within six at the 8:49 mark. Price came up clutch by knocking down three foul shots after drawing some contact while shooting from three-point range, cutting the lead to four points. Kovaloff and Manuel each dropped two buckets to make it a two-point game with 2:21 left to play as the game started to heat up in the dying minutes.
Another brief run from the hosts pushed their lead to five points, but Kovaloff buried another three to make it a 67-65 ballgame with 29 seconds left. Kovaloff hit another three-pointer with less than 10 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one point, but Corban made its free throws down the stretch to hang on for the 74-70 victory on its home court.
