NEWBERG, Ore. — The Pacific University men's tennis team advanced to the Northwest Conference Championship match after a 5-0 sweep of Whitman. The 37
th ranked Boxers were able to claim the victory after winning all three doubles matches before gaining the last two needed points in singles play.
How It Happened
Pacific showed its resilience to sweep doubles after falling behind on courts two and three. The Boxers' no. 4 regionally-ranked pairing of
Mason Tran (Freshman/Irvine, CA) and
Reyn Miyagawa (Junior/Kaneohe, HI) made quick work of the Blues' top tandem on court one.
Joey Hu (Junior/Aiea, HI) and
Koby Murata (Junior/Kaimuki, HI) fought their way to a tiebreak and then clinched the match, 8-7 (7-1) after using the momentum they had built to cruise through the tiebreak. On court three,
Quentin Gonzalez (Junior/Orange, CA) and
Aidan Rooney (Freshman/Mililani, HI) methodically marched to an 8-5 win over their Blues counterparts to finish the doubles sweep.
Tran, the no. 5 singles player in the West, put the Blues on the brink with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court one. Gonzalez clinched the match for Pacific with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court three. No. 16 Miyagawa was just behind in the race to clinch with a 6-2, 5-1 score on court two when the match halted.
