Portland, Ore. – The Boxers competed in their second to last meet this season at the Portland Distance Carnival. Field events for this meet were contested at George Fox University on Friday, and all track events contested at Lewis and Clark College on Saturday. The Boxers saw several athletes achieve lifetime PRs and one champion, with
Dominic Funk winning the men's javelin.
On Friday at George Fox, four Boxer field athletes competed in the throws and jumps. Both
Naomi Johnson and
Dominic Funk have been searching for NCAA Qualifying throws in their respective events during post season. Johnson took second place in the discus throw with her toss of 38.34m.
Dominic Funk won the men's javelin with is toss of 55.03m.
On the track, Rome Moreland ran his way to a lifetime PR in the men's 200m dash, clocking in at 23.15. He placed 5
th in the race.
Emily Rutkowski followed suit, running her lifetime PR of 1:05.48 in the women's 400n hurdles, good for a runner-up finish. In the 800m,
Marc Manzano and
Annie Berry also ran their new lifetime PRs in their respective races; Manzano clocked in at 2:06.00 and Berry won her heat in 2:19.24, good for fourth place overall. Abby Klein then grabbed her own lifetime PR in the women's 5,000m race, running 18:33.02.
Kara Putman finished her stellar career as a Boxer in the women's 1500m, racing her way to a lifetime PR of 4:49.75. Putman ends her final season as one of the most decorated female distance runners in Pacific University Cross Country and Track and Field history. She was an NCAA National Championship qualifier in cross-country this fall after winning the NWC 6k championship race, and was a runner-up in both the 10k and 5k at the NWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She is a member of the school record-holding Distance Medley Relay team and her name appears all over the Pacific Top Ten record lists. Putman ranks #3 on Pacific Women's All-Time list for the 6,000m cross country race, is ranked #5 in both the mile and 3,000m on Pacific Women's Indoor Track Top Ten list, and is ranked #4 in the 5,000m and #2 in the 10,000m on Pacific Women's Outdoor Track Top Ten list.
The Boxers have one final meet left on the schedule before the NCAA National Championships. A few athletes will head to the George Fox University Last Chance Meet this Thursday, April 19 in Newberg for one final shot at achieving an NCAA Qualifying mark.
