Lining up for a game-winning penalty kick in the final minute, Pacific freshman
Julia Fechter said she just went through her normal routine.
Â
"Four steps back, two to the side, a quick breath and off we go."
Â
The routine worked as Fechter buried the kick past the George Fox goalkeeper and into the bottom left corner of the net and the Boxers celebrated a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Hanson Stadium.
Â
"It felt so good," Fechter said of the penalty kick. "It's always great to see a goal, but especially a PK."
Â
Pacific led for most of the afternoon as Fechter put Pacific up 1-0 on a goal in the 14
th minute off an assist from
Katelyn Volchok.Â
Â
But the Bruins evened the match at 1-1 in 84
th minute. After a save by Pacific goalkeeper
Isabella De La Cruz in the 85
th minute kept the match tied, Fechter was fouled inside the penalty area to set up the game-winning penalty kick.Â
Â
"We've been working on staying consistent this whole season and I think we did," Fechter said. "In the last five minutes, we decided we were going to push for it because we knew we could. We just put everything out there."
Â
Mirella Garcia,
Ella Mee and
Gwendolyn Saing also had shots on goal for the Boxers, who recorded their first victory since winning at George Fox on Sept. 16.Â
Â
Pacific improved to 3-9-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the Northwest Conference with the win.
Â
"We're on the up now," Fechter said. "It was a solid team win. Everyone worked very hard."
Â
Next, the Boxers host Whitman College on Saturday, Oct. 21 at noon.
