Pacific women fall at Puget Sound on buzzer-beater

TACOMA, Wash. – Pacific sophomore Sydney Esperanza made a game-tying layup with 2 seconds remaining. But Puget Sound scored at the buzzer to edge the Boxers 51-49 Saturday afternoon in a back-and-forth Northwest Conference contest.

After the Loggers took an early 13-6 advantage, Pacific responded with an 8-0 run, which included two Brookelynn Burke 3-pointers, to take a 14-13 lead with 2:55 remaining in the first period.

Puget Sound went ahead 15-14 on a layup and led until Karina Franco tied the game at 40-40 on a 3-pointer with 8:43 remaining in the game. Shaade Williams gave the Boxers a 44-42 lead with 2:08 to go. The Loggers knocked down a 3-pointer to take a 48-45 lead with 22 seconds to go. 

Franco led Pacific with 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Williams finished with 11 points, including two free throws with 17 seconds remaining, to get the Boxers within 48-47.

Pacific shot just 29.3 percent from the field in the loss. Puget Sound shot 29.7 percent.
