BROOKS, Ore. – Rachel Schreiber (So., Longmont, Colo.) opened her season with a close victory while Tyler Shipley (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) made a splash in his collegiate debut as Pacific opened the 2012 cross country season with a dual against George Fox Saturday at Willamette Mission State Park.

Schreiber covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:20.2 to finish four seconds ahead of second of second place Courtney Hochtettler of George Fox.  Just 12 seconds divided the first and fifth place finishers.  The debut win allowed Schreiber to move up to No. 10 on the Boxers' all-time list for the distance.

Shipley, meanwhile, broke the 16-minute barrier for 5,000-meters in his first collegiate race as he finished in second place in the men's race with a time of 15:57.8.  Shipley finished 21 seconds behind the winner, George Fox's Joseph Pia.

The two efforts paced a pair of closely contested losses in the dual team scores for the Boxers.  Pacific fell by a narrow 27-28 margin in the women's race while the men fell by a 25-32 margin.  Wins in dual meets are given to the team that compiles the least points based on the finish of the top-five runners for each squad.

“I am very pleased with the day,” said Pacific head coach Tim Boyce, who acknowledged that the teams trained through the day with extended warm-up and cooldown segments.  “Despite that and our conservative racing strategy, there were some excellent early season times and a lot of folks who had great Pacific debuts.”

Jilinda Franklin (Sr., Fort Jones, Calif.) finished third for the women.  Her time of 19:25.9 was a personal best and ranks No. 12 on the Pacific all-time list.  Kiersten Iwai (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) finished seventh in a time of 20:17.2.  Sidney Davis (Fr., Redmond, Ore.) placed eighth in her Pacific debut with a time of 20:19.9 while Sarah Tomscha (Jr., Salem, Ore.) placed ninth in her debut race with a time of 20:20.7.

Joe Deardorff (Sr., Independence, Ore.) opened his final cross country season with a third place finish and a time of 16:09.1.  Dan Flora (Sr., North Bend, Ore.) finished sixth in 16:20.7 and Jerry Sanchez (Sr., Mecca, Calif.) was ninth in a time of 16:39.9.  Rudy Sanchez (Jr., Albany, Ore.) returned from injury to round out the top-five, placing 12th with a time of 17:01.2.

The Boxers will take next week off before competition before entering into their first big meet of the season.  Pacific competes next at the Sundodger Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington, on Sept. 15 at Seattle's Lincoln Park.
