Box Score NEWBERG, Ore.- Pacific University volleyball lost a five-set match on Wednesday night at George Fox. (15-25, 25-16, 14-25, 25-17, 12-15)
Pacific got off to a slow start in set one trailing 12-5 when the first timeout was called by the Boxers. The Boxers were never able to close that gap coming out of the timeout and dropped the first set 25-15 to the Bruins. In the first set, the Boxers were led by Mara Murphy (Freshman/Salt Lake City, Utah) who had five kills and Haley Walz (Senior/Tucson, AZ) led defensively with 9 digs in the set.
The Boxers came out in the second set on an 8-1 run to force an early timeout by the Bruins. Pacific continued to maintain the lead in the set behind the offensive fire power of Alison Brown (Sophomore/Oregon City, Oregon) who was able to tally 3 kills to take a 21-11 lead forcing the second and final timeout by the Bruins. Pacific was able to claim the final four points of the set to secure the 25-16 win. Murphy was able to add 6 kills, while Walz added 8 more digs in the set.
George Fox was able to come out to a fast start in set three jumping out to a quick 11-5 lead and was able to extend that margin of lead on the way to 25-14 victory for the Bruins. George Fox was carried to the dominant set victory by a .440 hitting percentage along with four service aces.
Needing to win the fourth set, Pacific got off to a 16-11 start following a successful block from Mara Murphy and Carissa Ramirez (Senior/ Hillsboro, OR) to force a Bruin timeout. Pacific was able to take advantage of the Bruins defense in the set by totaling 4 service aces, two from Elika Unti (Senior/Castro Valley, CA) and one each from Chloe Elmore (Senior/Salem, OR) and Mara Murphy.
The Bruins came out in the fifth set on an 8-2 run forcing Pacific to take their second and final timeout of the deciding set. Pacific, however, was not going to let the Bruins close the night out easily and were able to produce a 9-3 run of their own to tie the match at 11. The Bruins would cap off the match scoring four of the last five points to take the deciding set earning the season sweep of the Boxers in Northwest Conference play.
