How It Happened
Pacific and Whitworth played an incredibly even first set. The Boxers opened the set with a 3-1 lead following back-to-back attack errors from the Pirates. From there the two NWC teams would alternate points before the Boxers would stretch the lead to 17-14 following a Murphy ace. Not going to be put away easily, the hosts would score six of the next eight points to take a 20-19 lead and force the Boxers to take a timeout. The Boxers capped off the first set with a win with a
Danica Nelson ace.
The first 11 points of the second set would be played even before Whitworth went on a 11-8 run to take a 17-11 lead. The visitors from Forest Grove struggled to gain any momentum in the second half of the set as Whitworth rolled to a 25-16 set win.
Gaining much of the momentum in the previous set, the Pirates opened set three in a dominating fashion scoring the first five points of the set. The control of the third set was never relinquished by the hosts as they won 25-13 taking a 2-1 lead.
The Boxers would not let Whitworth control the opening half of the fourth set as they were tied 17 all midway through. From that point on, the hosts had plans to end the night early going on a 8-3 run to claim the four set victory.
What It Means
The Boxers conference record falls to 3-4 putting them in a tie for sixth-place. Whitworth extends their conference leading record to 6-1.
