Federal Way, Wash. – The Whitworth men and the Whitman women are your 2024 Northwest Conference Swimming Champions.
The men from Whitworth completed the undefeated season by beating everyone one more time to secure their conference championship, finishing with 770.5 points.
The Pirates won three more events and three medals Sunday. No win and medal were more impressive than the 1650-yard freestyle. Whitworth's Kai Hayashida (16:24.88) won the event beating teammate Trenten Schmidt (16:25.55). In an event where the field typically spreads, these two were stroke for stroke during the more than 16-minute event, finishing just 7 tenths apart.
Zachary Washburn, a name which has become very familiar this weekend, won the men's 100-yard freestyle emphatically with a time of 44.17, more than a second faster than second-place Emory Burden (45.59) of Puget Sound.
Henry Brewster (1:46.65) was the final Pirate to win in the men's 200-yard butterfly. After 150 yards, Brewster maintained a two second lead and would not look back before beating Keenan Riggs Turpin (1:52.25) from Whitman and Whitworth teammate Austin Elwyn (1:54.42).
Thanks to three wins and two medals the Blues of Whitman secured the women's conference championships with 620.5 points, 180.5 better than second-place Linfield.
Whitman's domination began in the women's 200-yard free when Frances Lenz (2:05.38) beat Pacific Lutheran's Emma Gassman (2:06.84) by a second and a half and Whitman teammate Adelaide Foden-Vencil by more than two seconds.
Shaye Agnew (52.42) was the next winner in the women's 100-yard freestyle, tabbing her second win of the weekend. The Blues last win and medal came in the 200-yard backstroke as teammates Josephine Piel (2:22.08) and Erin McKinney (2:23.21) went yard for yard all the way to the wire with Piel winning by a little over a second.
Even though the Linfield Wildcats led after day one, the Whitman Blues were able to strike during individual races to crown them as conference champions.
