Pirates find treasure on day two of NWC Swim Championships

Whitworth dominated day two of the NWC Swimming championships, winning five of eight finals held Friday night at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Whitworth's Kai Hayashida (4:38.30) won the first of the Pirates five championships in the 500-yard free, edging teammate Parker Dangleis (4:41.02).

Austin Elwyn, the freshman Pirate, would be the next to win a medal in the men's 200-yard medley (1:52.76) beating Blues senior Andrew Hanson (1:53.56). Isabella Hoopes (2:07.26) would complete the sweep in the 200 -ard IM by 35 hundredths of a second over Puget Sound's Madeline Brennan (2:07.61).

In the fastest race of the championship weekend, Zachary Washburn (20.43) would kick his ship to a win over Puget Sound's Emory Burden (20.75).

Whitworth's (3:23.49) final medal came seemingly from nowhere as Washburn passed four competitors to win the 400-yard IM for the Pirates. Puget Sound led the first three legs, but would end up finishing second by just 15 hundredths of a second.

Kristi Keppo (5:03.69) from Linfield broke Whitworth's attempt for six medals by shocking qualifying favorite Makhaela Parrish (5:05.93) in the women's 500-yard freestyle. Parrish placed third with Puget Sound's Sara Guillen (5:05.39) finishing in between Keppo and Parrish.

Whitman's Shaye Agnew (23.77) gave her competitors the blues by being the only woman in 50-yard free to swim in the 23's when she won the event.

The final championship went the way of the Lutes from PLU (3:53.24) in the women's 400-yard medley relay. Puget Sound and Linfield were able to keep up with PLU through the first half of the relay but Jessic ORdaz and Emma Gassman quickly built a lead, and never looked back, securing the win for the Lutes almost four seconds ahead of Puget Sound (3:57.02).

Prelims for Day 3 start at 9:30 am, and finals will be broadcast at 5pm. All events at the NWC Swimming Championships can be streamed at https://nwcnetwork.tv/.
