Boxers record big performances at Pacific Multi meet

Pacific University hosted the Pacific Multi competition this past Monday and Tuesday at Hanson Stadium. The event consisted of two days of competition where men competed in ten running, jumping, and throwing events, while the women competed in seven. It was a big turnout with lots of athletes eager to test their skills across this intimidating event, and it turned out to be a fruitful two days for Pacific athletes.

Top Performers

Day one had the women competing in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200. It started off strong with junior Courtney Tiernan and freshman Dani Hammond both setting personal records in the hurdle race. They both followed that up by nearly setting PRs in the high jump, setting new PRs in the shot put, and running close to PRs in the 200. After the first day, they both were over halfway to scoring the necessary points to qualify for the conference meet.

Day one was also a very good for the Pacific men, where they competed in the 100, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400. Junior Kamron Shield and senior Braden Kent both came out strong in the 100, each setting a new personal record in the process. They also had good days in long jump and shot put, before going and setting huge PRs in the high jump. They ended the day with the 400, and secured point totals also above the halfway mark to conference qualifying.

Day two was another strong showing for both the heptathletes and decathletes. Both Hammond and Tiernan had solid long jump performances, followed by PRs in the javelin throw. They finished off the two days of competition with the 800, scoring 3212 and 3758 points, respectively and qualifying for the Northwest Conference Multi Championships. Tiernan's mark of 3758 points put her at No. 3 on Pacific's All-Time Top Ten list, while Hammond's score of 3212 places her at No. 7.

Shields and Kent once again came out strong in the first event of day two, each setting personal records in the 110 hurdles, with Shields' time of 17.47 qualifying him for the conference championships in that individual event. They both would go on to set PRs in the next three events as well, the discus, pole vault, and javelin. Kent improved his pole vault mark by over two feet, while Shields improved his mark by nearly three feet. Shields and Kent then finished off the competition by racing the 1500, ending with 5617 and 4564 points, respectively also qualifying them both for the Northwest Conference Multi Championship. Shields' mark places him at #6 on the All-Time Top Ten list. At the end of the event, these four Pacific athletes recorded 20 personal records between them.

"All four of our athletes competing qualified for conference and had nice PRs in their first and only shot towards the Northwest Conference Championships. I'm very proud of them." said head coach Ryan Huntersimms "We train for two meets essentially and they took advantage of the amazing weather and being in front of their home crowd."
