Ellie Parker each had a double double for the Pacific University volleyball team, who dropped a 28-26, 21-25, 17-25, 27-25, 15-11 decision to host George Fox on Friday night in Newberg.
It was the first loss in a five-set match for the Boxers in 2017, who had won their last four five-set matchups. Pacific falls to 13-4 overall and 6-3 in the Northwest Conference; whereas, George Fox goes to 6-7 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
The double double by Mendicino (22 kills and 24 digs) was her third-straight and fifth of the season. The double double effort by Parker was her third-straight and ninth of the season, recording a career-high 52 assists to go along with 17 digs. Plus, Duncan tallied her eighth double double of the season, recording 15 kills and 15 digs. Pacific out hit George Fox, .203 to .144 in the loss.
Pacific started the match with a .244 hitting percentage on the strength of seven kills by Mendicino in the opening set. The two teams erased a set point opportunity before three-straight kills by Paige O'Rear for George Fox allowed the host Bruins to win the first set. The opening set saw the score tied on 13 occasions and two teams trade the lead on five occasions.
The Boxers improved its hitting percentage with a .273 clip in the second set with five kills each from Mendicino and freshman
Jordan Zweifel (Tillamook, Ore.). Four-straight points by the Boxers – two of which came on kills by Zweifel – put Pacific ahead 15-12 and in front for the remainder of the set. Sophomore
Mackenzie Brown (Klamath Falls, Ore.) notched a service ace to close out the set with a 25-21 victory.
Pacific found itself behind 3-0 early in the third set before scoring six-straight points to take a lead for nearly the remainder of the set. After the fifth tie of the set and the score tied at 12, the Boxers went back ahead for the remainder of the set. The Boxers closed out the set, scoring eight of the last 11 points. For the second-straight set, Mendicino and Zweifel each had five kills to lead the Boxers.
The fourth set featured eight tie scores and three lead changes. The Bruins managed to out hit the Boxers, .153 to .123 in the set. Facing match point, George Fox scored the final three points of the set to force a fifth and deciding set.
George Fox started the fifth set on a 5-0 run before the Boxers rallied to tie the set at 9 and 11. With the set tied at 11, the Bruins scored the next four points for the five-set victory. Danyle Dupray had six of her 20 kills in the deciding set for George Fox.
Next, Pacific will come back to the Stoller Center on Saturday night at 7 p.m. to face Willamette, who defeated Linfield on Friday. The Boxers have a 6-2 home record and earlier this season, they defeated the Bearcats, 25-19,25-15,25-20 in Salem on Sept. 16.
