Boxers Rally for Ninth-Straight Win

Box Score Sophomore Karlee Duncan (Bend, Ore.) and freshman Jordan Zweifel (Tillamook, Ore.) each had a double double to lead the Pacific volleyball team to a 25-12, 24-26, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13 win over host Lewis & Clark on Friday night in Portland.

The Boxers (9-1, 3-0) have won nine-consecutive matches after a season-opening loss to Montana Western (Sept. 1) and are off to one of its best starts in school history. Duncan had a match-high 17 kills to go along with 14 digs and Zweifel added 13 kills and 12 digs in the win. Duncan had six of her 17 kills in the fourth set and Zweifel had three kills in each of the first four sets. Senior Karissa Komo (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii) had four service aces and the Boxer frontline had 10 blocks in the win.

The Pioneers (1-9, 0-3) were led by Kortney Meyer, who also had a double double, with 12 kills and 12 digs in the defeat.

Pacific started the match, hitting .320 en route to a 25-12 win in the opening set. Sophomore Milana Ivkovic (Beaverton, Ore.) had four kills and Zweifel added three. The Boxers opened the contest on a 12-3 run with four-different players for Pacific recording a kill. The host Pioneers won the second set by a 26-24 margin in a set that featured eight tied scores and four lead changes. Pacific out hit Lewis & Clark by a .200 to .167 margin. During the set, Pacific found itself behind as much as seven, 21-14 before a 9-2 run tied the set at 23 on a Duncan kill. The two teams each recorded a side out before Lewis & Clark secured the set after a pair of hitting errors by Pacific.

With the match tied at a set, four unanswered points by the host Pioneers put Lewis & Clark ahead for the remainder of the set. In the third set, Lewis & Clark out hit Pacific, .163 to .049. It was the only time on the night that the host Pioneers out hit the Boxers. Meyer had five of her 12 kills to lead the home team.

Trailing two sets to one, the Boxers showed the same resilience that brought them back in last Friday's five-set win over George Fox. An 8-3 run to start the set prompted a Lewis & Clark time out. In the early run, Duncan had a pair of kills. The Pioneers would only be able to cut the deficit to three as the Boxers forced a fifth and deciding set. Duncan finished the set with six kills and Ivkovic added four more.

In the fifth set, Pacific found itself behind 8-4 and veteran head coach Kip Yoshimura called a timeout as the two teams switched sides. The Boxers responded to the veteran coach, tying the set at 9. A kill by Duncan put Pacific ahead 12-11 and for the first time since an early 2-1 lead. After the two teams traded side outs, Pacific secured the match after a bad set and a match-clinching kill by Duncan.

Next, the Boxers come back home to host Puget Sound on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. in the Stoller Center. The Loggers are coming off a straight-set win over George Fox on Friday night.
