Brooke France Wins the NCAA National Title in the Women's Javelin

Freshman Brooke France etched her name into the Pacific University women's track and field record book, winning the javelin throw for the first individual national title in program history at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday.

The freshman from Willamina, Oregon native entered the competition as the 12th-ranked competitor with a season-best throw of 42.83m. She started the competition on Thursday with a throw of 132-11 (40.53m), improving on her final throw of the preliminaries with a toss of 135-7 (41.33m) to secure a spot in the finals.

Seeded third going into the final three throws, France vaulted to the top with her first throw of the finals with a personal-best toss of 146-5 (44.64m). The toss is the fourth-best throw performance in program history. The competition came inches away from taking over the top spot but the freshman remained in front en route to the national title.

Earlier this spring, she won the women's hammer throw (43.57m) at the Northwest Conference Championships, took fifth in the women's discus (39.36m) and was in fourth in the women's javelin (41.30m), scoring a total of 19 points for Pacific.

Also in the women's javelin competition at the NCAA National Championships was Emily Sproul, who reached the NCAA Championships for a fourth time. She finished her career with a 13th-place finish and a throw of 129-8 (39.52m). Sproul ends her career as a two-time All-American in the javelin throw.
