Boxers Track & Field Compete in Oregon Twilight and Linfield Open

Eugene, Ore. and McMinville, Ore. – The Boxers track team competed in two track and field meets this past weekend. Four athletes competed in the competitive Oregon Twilight meet on Friday night at Hayward Field, and athletes competed in the Linfield Open on Saturday.

On Friday night, Naomi Johnson and Dominic Funk started the competition off for the Boxers in the throwing events at Hayward Field. Johnson competed in the women's discus, throwing 38.18m – good for a ninth place finish. Funk followed in the men's javelin competition, where he threw 54.10m – also good for a ninth place finish. Both Johnson and Funk are looking for marks in their respective event that will qualify them for the NCAA National Championships. The top 22 women and the top 20 men in the nation for each event qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Following the throws, Annie Berry and Kara Putman took to the track for the women's 1500m race. Berry crossed the line in 22nd place with a huge PR of 4:46.23. Putman followed with her 26th place finish. This race moved Berry up to 3rd place on Pacific's Top Ten Performance list – Putman is 7th on that list. This duo also owns top spots (Berry in 3rd and Putman in 4th) in the women's 5k Top Ten list after their incredible performances last Friday at the OSU High Performance Meet.
The next morning, 18 Boxers headed to Linfield to compete in the Linfield Open. Emily Rutkowski took third place in the women's 400m hurdles with her time of 1:08.27. Abby Klein also secured a third place finish in the women's 800m race. This was Klein's first 800m collegiate race – she won her heat by eight seconds, clocking in at 2:25.38.

Riley Stewart secured a victory in the men's 800m race in his time of 1:55.85. This was Stewart's first 800m race of the season; usually his twin brother Garrett Stewart is racing the 800m. This was a large PR for Riley Stewart in this event.

The season is now winding down for the Boxers, with only two more meets left on the schedule. Athletes who remain competing are mostly looking for a mark to qualify them for NCAAs in their event, are looking for a school record, or are looking to move up or crack into the Top Ten list. Only a number of athletes will continue on to compete in the remaining meets. The next competition will be the Portland Distance Carnival with throwing events hosted at George Fox University on Friday, May 13 and running events hosted at Lewis and Clark on Saturday, May 14.
