Boxers Have a Great Meet at Lewis & Clark

Portland, Ore. – The Boxer men and women's track teams competed at Lewis & Clark this past weekend. The hammer throw, pole vault and javelin were contested on Friday at Clackamas Community College, and the rest of the events were contested on Saturday at Lewis and Clark's track. Both teams won the meet, with the men scoring 153 points over Lewis and Clark's 118 points and the women scoring 143 points over Lewis & Clark's 112 points. Several athletes moved up or onto the Outdoor Top Ten list again. The Northwest Conference has a qualifying standard for each event, and an athlete must achieve that standard mark in their event during the regular season in order to qualify for conference. This week, 18 more Boxers qualified for conference in their event(s).

Top Performers

Freshman Henry Tierney had a great day once again, this time in the men's 800m race. This was Tierney's first 800m race of the year, and he opened with a 1:52.42 for 3rd place. Annie Berry also ran a very fast 800m, her first of the year, opening up with a 2:16.24. Both these athletes are now ranked #2 all-time in the 800m. The school record in the men's 800m is 1:49.66, set in 1976 by Pacific Hall Of Fame athlete Patrick McKeethen. The women's 800m school record is 2:14.57, set in 2008 by Kelsey Owens. The men's school records in both the 1500m and 800m races have stood for 47 years, and there have only been a handful of Boxers in the last 20 years to even crack into the top ten of those events. Particularly, the men's 800m top ten only has three marks that were run after the year 1978; a testament to the talent of the Pacific teams of the 1960s and 70s.

Freshman Ally Hammond has also had a strong start to her season, and it seems some more school records may be in jeopardy. She is now ranked #2 in the women's 100m hurdles. The school record is held by Cassie Arroyo, set in 2006 at 14.97.

The Boxers had 24 top-three finishes at the meet.

On the track, Hammond took second in the women's 100m (12.99), second in the women's 100m hurdles (15.51) and third in the women's 200m (26.39). Romel Moreland took second in the men's 100m (11.18), and Andrew Reyburn won the men's high jump (1.85m, 6-00.75) and took third in the men's 110m hurdles (18.22). Zion Booker took third in the men's 200m (22.71), and Henry Tierney took third in the men's 800m (1:52.42). Maddy Hubbs took second in the women's steeplechase in a near PR of 11:49.46; she won the conference steeple last spring and that is shaping up to be a competitive event this year. Cris Brethower followed right behind in third place with a 12:06.36.

On the field, Savannah Ashbaugh took third in the women's discus throw (30.83m, 101-01) and second in the women's hammer throw (39.01m, 128-00). Samantha Clark followed right behind in third (38.78m, 127-02). Daniel Gonzalez won the men's hammer (40.82m, 133-11) and Feleti Martinez-Afemui took third (33.29m, 109-02). Autumn Gerard took second in women's high jump (1.15m, 3-09.25). The Boxers swept the men's long jump, with Lucas Dahl winning the event (6.70m, 21-11.75), Jayden Fordham taking second (6.46m, 21-02.50) and Tyler Vargas taking 3rd (6.41m, 21-00.50). Itzel Vazquez took third in the women's long jump (4.65m, 15-03.25) and second in the triple jump (9.82m, 32-02.75). Jarod Moren took second in the men's pole vault (4.10m, 13-05.25). The men's 4x 400m relay team of Heinze, Booker, Shields and Dahl won the race in 3:27.53. The women's 4x 400m relay team of Altuhovs, Brethower, Taylor and Berry took third in 4:26.36.
