Salem, Ore. – The Boxer men and women's track teams competed in day one of the 2023 Northwest Conference Track and Field Outdoor Championships. Most of the events contested today were preliminary rounds, with final rounds happening tomorrow. Some field events and running events contested today were finals and contributed to overall team scores. For the Boxers today, Ally Hammond, Jarod Moren and Maddy Hubbs earned First-Team All Conference Honors, which is given to athletes who finish in the top three of their event(s).
Jarod Moren started the day off for the Boxers by taking second place in the men's pole vault with his jump of 4.22m (13-10.00). Then, Ally Hammond rushed between the 100m hurdle prelims and the 100m dash prelims to make it to the women's long jump competition. Hammond won the women's long jump with a PR mark of 5.49m (18-00.25). Maddy Hubbs ended the day for the Boxers with her third place finish in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase and new PR of 11:29.94.
Also scoring points for the Boxers today were Cris Brethower in the women's steeple with her 7th place finish (12:15.37), Samantha Clark in the women's hammer throw with her 7th place finish (39.06m, 128-01), Makayla Kraemer in the women's pole vault (2.78m, 9-01.50), Andrew Reid with his 5th place finish in the men's hammer throw (48.44m, 158-11), and Lucas Dahl with his 5th place finish in the men's long jump (6.76m, 22-02.25).
In addition to scored points, several Boxers made it out of prelims today into the finals tomorrow. For all events 400m and shorter, the winner of each heat plus the next fastest times (fill to eight) qualify out of prelims for finals. In the 800m, the top two runners from each heat plus the next four fastest times qualify for finals. Today, the Boxers had three men qualify in the 100m dash: Lucas Dahl (10.95), Rome Moreland (11.22) and Brody Bantolina (11.34) and Ally Hammond (12.76) qualified in the women's 100m dash. Hammond also qualified in the women's 100m hurdles (15.62), and Emily Rutkowski qualified in the women's 400m hurdles (1:06.36). In the men's 200m dash, Lucas Dahl (22.21) and Zion Booker (22.88) both qualified. In the men's 400m, Alex Heinze (50.82) and Zion Booker (51.02), as well as Angelica Gatica Gomez (1:00.18) in the women's 400m, are moving on to finals. In the men's 800m, Henry Tierney (1:54.75) and Garrett Stewart (1:55.85) both moved out of their prelim to qualify for finals tomorrow.
As of now, the men's team sits in 6th with 16 points and the women are currently tied for 5th place with 21 points.
