Portland, Ore. – The Boxer men and women's track teams sent some athletes to Portland to compete in the Portland Distance Carnival hosted by Lewis & Clark. On Saturday, Annie Berry broke her own school record in the women's 800m in a new time of 2:12.51, besting her previous record of 2:14.19. Berry's time was good for 11th place in a highly competitive field featuring professional runners. Raevyn Rogers of Union Athletics Club won the race in 2:03.95, and Alli Cash of Asics came in second in 2:05.29.
Berry's new time of 2:12.51 puts her at #23 in the nation in NCAA DIII as of Monday, May 15. This was the last weekend available for athletes to compete and attempt to secure NCAA Qualifying marks, in addition to any last chance weekday meets hosted before or on Thursday, May 18, 2023. The NCAA DIII National Outdoor Track and Field Championships consists of the best 22 marks in each event as of Thursday, May 18, 2023. That means athletes must achieve a top-22 mark in the nation in their event during the season to qualify for the NCAA Championships. If an athlete in the top 22 rankings of an event does not declare themselves in that event by the Thursday deadline, then the next runner in line will qualify pending they have declared themselves. So, if Berry stays at #23 through the end of Thursday, May 18 and at least one athlete ranked ahead of her does not declare, Berry will be headed to the NCAA National Championships in the 800m. We will release an update as soon as official accepted entries to the NCAA Championships are released.
On Friday, some Boxers competed in the field events at the Portland Distance Carnival. Dominic Funk led the way for the Boxers by winning the men's javelin with a toss of 62.21m (204-01). Funk's best mark this season is 63.57 (208-07) from the Pacific Open on April 1st. That mark currently sits Funk at #8 in the nation, and is expected to hold through this week as an NCAA National Qualifying mark.
On Saturday, Liz Bradley also ran an excellent 800m race, setting a new PR of 2:18.83, which moves her up to #4 on Pacific's Top Ten List.
Some Boxers will compete at the GFU Final Qualifier this Thursday, May 18, 2023. For the latest information on Pacific Athletics, make sure to check out GoBoxers.com. You can also find the Boxers on social media at @GoBoxers and @BoxerTFXC, and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
