Rochester, NY. – Senior Dominic Funk took third place in the men's javelin competition at the NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Thursday, May 25. His third place finish earned him All-American Honors. Funk broke his own school record by almost a meter in his final attempt, throwing 65.26m (214-01).
Funk competed at the NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field National Championships three times in his career, and earned All-American Honors twice. Funk has set the school record in the men's javelin twice as well, first in 2022 at 64.56 (211-9), and now in 2023 at 65.26m (214-01). At the NCAA Championships in 2021, Funk finished in 8th place to earn All-American Honors. In 2022, Funk finished 10th at the championships. This year, Funk found himself in the top three on the podium in third place, once again earning All-American Honors.
In the NCAA competition yesterday, Funk competed in the second flight of prelims. In the prelims, his third throw was his best at 61.06m (200-04). That mark set him at eighth place in prelims, good enough to make it to finals. The top nine competitors out of both preliminary flights go to finals immediately after prelims and take three more throws. In finals, Funk remained in eighth place for his first two throws, with his best throw being his fifth at 62.21m (204-01). On his final throw, Funk had the best throw of his career, dropping a bomb of 65.26m (214-01), a full three meters better than his previous best throw of his series. On the final throw of his career at Pacific, Funk took third place in the NCAA Championships, earned All-American Honors and re-set his own school record.
